  • 描述: Improving the aerobic fitness of junior-high school students in programs where disengagement and disinterest are often obstacles to participation and involvement is a significant problem. The Self-Determination Theory postulates that by fulfilling the basic needs of competency, relatedness and autonomy, a process of internalization will occur, resulting in augmented motivational levels. Sport Education is an instructional model involving team affiliation, seasons, competition, record-keeping, a culminating event and festivity that has shown positive results when used in a sport-specific setting. A total of 417 eighth- and ninth-grade students were divided into two groups to compare the effects of a Sport Educational model with a more traditional approach of developing aerobic fitness. During physical education class, the experimental group participated in events that were designed to be novel, engaging and applicable in a Sport Education setting and the control group participated in 15-minute runs around a track. The 10-week study showed statistically significant increases in aerobic fitness in the Sport Education group, as measured in pre and posttest 2400-meter runs. Students in the Sport Education group also perceived higher levels of competency, autonomy and relatedness, leading to an internalization process that produced enhanced motivational levels. The Sport Education students also revealed increased intentions to continue with aerobic fitness-type activities after cessation of the interventions, when compared to their peers in the control group.
