描述:
The seventeenth century witnessed an important historical transformation in Chinese calligraphy. Toward the end of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), a number of individualist calligraphers launched an expressive movement in calligraphy characterized by a spontaneous and bold cursive script. After the fall of the Ming, a new current of calligraphy stressing the plain, archaic, and awkward flavor of ancient epigraphy developed in the new sociocultural context of the early Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Fu Shan, a distinguished calligrapher and scholar who lived through the period of the late Ming and early Qing, was not only the last master of wild cursive calligraphy as practiced in the seventeenth century, but was also one of the forerunners of epigraphical calligraphy. By studying Fu Shan's life and calligraphy in relation to the political and intellectual context of late Ming and early Qing, this dissertation aims to cast new light on the Ming-Qing transformation, which has had a profound influence on the calligraphy of the last three hundred years.
This dissertation consists of four chapters. Chapter One presents the general cultural background of the late Ming and Dong Qichang's legacy to late Ming individualist calligraphers. Fu Shan's early life in the late Ming is also discussed. Chapter Two gives an account of Fu Shan's life and calligraphy in the early years of the Manchu conquest and discusses the appeal of Yan Zhenqing's calligraphy to Fu Shan as well as Fu's pursuit of strangeness and awkwardness in calligraphy in the new political setting. Chapter Three examines the formation of a new intellectual discourse in the early Qing and its impact on calligraphy. Fu Shan's eloquent advocacy of epigraphic calligraphy in relation to contemporary intellectual trends is illuminated. Chapter Four contributes a thorough discussion of Fu Shan's cursive calligraphy, especially his wild and eccentric calligraphy. In the epilogue, a brief discussion of eighteenth century changes in intellectual life leads to the question why some calligraphic currents were dying out and why epigraphical calligraphy became a competitor to classical tradition of Wang Xizhi.
