  • 描述: This paper examines the notion of liminality in Ian McEwan’s novels through the prism of beachscapes. From Dover to Chesil and Brighton, beachscapes strangely seem to crop up in the novelist’s most recent fiction. They first constitute a strongly intertextual element, connecting the text to the literary tradition of the country, but also function as liminal spaces whose hapticity, in the Deleuzian sense of it, paradoxically obscures vision in order to offer the subject the potentialities of a new sense of self. However, it seems that in On Chesil Beach, and in McEwan’s fiction more generally, liminality is not, or not only, the locus of a fruitful in-between: its paradoxical permanence, connected to the subject’s impossibility of crossing symbolical threshold(s) may signal a counter-interpretation of 1960s modernity as a problematic, never-ending moment of transition.
