  • 描述: Sport historians and sociologists speculate on many causes for the demise of "sandlot" games. During the 1980s the Council on Physical Education for Children (COPEC), a subdivision of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), was the US's biggest advocate for child-focused, developmentally appropriate sports. The COPEC argued against using the "mini-adult" sports model common in many commities and instead promoted an "everyone can learn" and "everyone can win" environment. Competition was not seen or vilified as being bad or wrong. But COPEC did oppose how competition was abused in many of the mini-adult models. Fortunately, COPEC was under the helm of Margie Hansen, whose competent, insightful leadership and mentorship served as a lighthouse for NASPE, and through NASPE for untold numbers of physical education practitioners. Through the untiring efforts of COPEC, the value of developmentally appropriate physical education curricula was preserved. However, the activities the children did outside of the school day continued to turn more sedentary.
