  • 描述: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize the elimination of global extreme poverty, reduction in income inequality, achievement of stable economic growth, provision of free primary and secondary education for youth, and availability of health facilities for all. The IMF is also contributing towards the attainment of these goals through its various financial support programs and technical assistance. In light of the global emphasis on reducing poverty as well as income inequality and the efforts undertaken by the IMF towards the achievement of the SDGs, this dissertation evaluates the impact of the IMF programs (concessional as well as non-concessional) on poverty, income inequality, and social spending in developing countries from 1990-2015. This research employs the propensity score matching technique, which controls the problem of endogeneity in observational studies to test the performance of the IMF programs. This study also explores the effectiveness of the IMF programs in contingent circumstances such as the time period under consideration, the degree of dependence on foreign aid, the extent of program completion, and the size of the IMF program funding. Based on the full sample analysis, the effects of all types of IMF programs on income inequality, poverty, and social spending are on average favorable. This study also finds that the non-concessional programs are associated with more significant favorable effects than the concessional programs. The evidence regarding the impact of the programs on social indicators in the sub-sample analysis is mixed. Last but not the least, the large sample empirical analysis is complemented with the case studies of the IMF's impact on poverty and income inequality in Pakistan and Cote d'Ivoire for the in-depth examination of these programs. Case studies suggest that political stability and the commitment from the government towards the implementation of the IMF programs play an important role in reducing poverty
