  • 描述: As Chinese textbooks published by Kang Hsuan Education in Taiwan and People’s Education in mainland China for grades 5-6 students both include the story of Journey to the West, this paper analyzes teaching methods and materials used by the two publishers’ textbooks to look for differences between China and Taiwan in teaching classic novels and the meaning behind such differences. This paper finds that, in terms of how teaching materials are edited, the textbook in Taiwan includes a rewritten version of the Journey to the West, and uses vernacular language whereas the textbook in China keeps the story’s original essence. In terms of the teaching methods, the textbook in Taiwan focuses on training students’ reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills, whereas the textbook in China focuses on analysis of the emotional quality of literature. Therefore, the two textbooks have different focuses in teaching. Such comparison would help textbook editors or teachers to make improvements on the selection of classic
