  • 描述: The quality of children's home literacy environments (HLE) predicts their early oral language and print-based skills, which are vital to later academic success (Bingham et al., 2017; Johnson et al., 2008). Parents facilitate children's early learning experiences by shaping their HLE through child engagement in literacy tasks and parents' scaffolding of literacy tasks. However, the ways in which parents shape the HLE are not fully understood. This study examined how parents' efficacy and parenting motivation predicted literacy engagement in the home. Since parents are often juggling work and other family responsibilities, they may struggle to meet their goals for literacy engagement with their children. Therefore, this study measured both actual and ideal literacy engagement to explore the alignment, or lack thereof, between aspirations and actual behaviors. Caregivers of preschool aged children completed an online survey that asked about the relationship between demographics, available literacy resources and literacy constraints in the reading environment, parent efficacy for literacy engagement, parenting motivations, and actual and ideal literacy engagement in the home. Factor analyses identified four dimensions of available resources in the reading environment, two dimensions of literacy constraints in the reading environment, two dimensions of actual literacy engagement and two dimensions of ideal literacy engagement. Respondents endorsed having a moderate sense of efficacy in their capacity to teach their children and held higher levels of autonomous motivation compared to controlled motivation for engaging in parenting responsibilities. Additionally, parents did not scaffold as many literacy activities and behaviors as they would like and reported their energy level to be the biggest barrier limiting reading with their child. Parent characteristics including ethnicity, education level, and time spent at home were significant predictors of literacy engagemen
