  • 描述: Home literacy environment (HLE) refers to children's exposure to and engagement in reading related activities in the home. Children's HLE prior to kindergarten is predictive of reading achievement in later years. Utilizing a sample of 2,090 children from the ECLS-K:2011 dataset, a large longitudinal nationally representative dataset, this study expands these investigations to children with learning disabilities (LDs), a population that is at heightened risk of experiencing low reading achievement. The results were that LD children are exposed to lower HLE than their non-disabled peers. Furthermore, HLE positively predicted reading achievement in kindergarten, which operated the same for both children with and without LDs. HLE is important to the reading achievement of both groups, but there is concern that LD children are receiving lower HLE and that LD children would benefit from better HLE. Finally, HLE predicted a less steep reading slope through fifth grade, however there is need for further investigation into if HLE predicts reading slope independent of its relation to early reading achievement.
