From the 18th century to today, feminism has undergone many changes and has been promoted differently by those in different countries around the world including Taiwan. In both Western and Chinese culture, man''s superiority to a woman has been a long-held belief. Each theory of feminism focuses on the oppression of females by both family and society. It has only been through the enactment of laws, elimination of classes or promotion of female self-consciousness that the statuses of women have improved and allow women to realize who they truly are as individuals. The creation of feminist literature has been a major promotional method of feminism. The development of feminism in Taiwan, due to the influence of political factors in different periods, has a unique development process. But along with the influence of Western culture and access to education, the development of Taiwan’s feminism in the past 50 years has also been tied closely to literature. Thanks to novels, essays, biographies, and an increase in the reporting of feminist issues, there are many descriptions of feminism. These works of literature have closed the equality gap between the male and female in regards to family, society, laws, and politics. This indicates the tremendous impact of literature on the changing of social norms and concepts. Dian-wan Chang is a Hakka woman who grew up in a traditional family that insisted that Hakka women to obey males and be fully devoted to their families, but did not respect women and their roles. She wrote real stories of Taiwanese women who pursued their self-realization successfully. From the perspective of historical evolution, she also analyzed relevant issues between the genders and about specific female-related topics. Moreover, she proves that one can be both a feminist and a good mother. Feminism does not mean that a woman has to abandon her biological role as it is part of her search for the real identity of females in family and society. The literature of Dian-wan Chang shows that she is an optimistic and active person and is willing to take on challenges. Her personality is influenced heavily by family education. Her knowledge of literature was taught by her father and her pursuit of self-realization was influenced by her mother. This paper mainly conducts a qualitative analysis of the background of Dian-wan Chang and her literature to examine the development of her perspective on feminism as well as her demonstration of feminism in real life. It is the aim of this study to have a deeper understanding and knowledge of the status of women in Hakka culture through studying the works of Dian-wan Chang on Hakka women as well as to comprehensively present a feminist perspective of Dian-wan Chang.
