Koji pottery is a traditional and delicate craft in Taiwan which was used from early art installations at temples to folk collections of art treasures. Themes from early auspicious animals, myths, folk stories to artistic creation integrated into contemporary living spaces are included. The early Koji pottery was made by craftsmen with a great deal of effort for gods to appreciate. From the south to the north, each famous temple has kept these precious cultural assets. Yeh Wang Koji pottery collected by Tzu Chi temple in hsueh chia is the most representative among them, and there are six works that have been recognized as national treasures by the Ministry of Culture. As times change, temple construction or decorations tend to be managed by foundations. The tradition of cordially inviting masters to be involved has gradually turned into bidding or price comparison, which resulted in the replacement of this costly traditional craft by compression molding and mass production for temple decoration. Since 1980, lots of people have been apprenticed to Lin Tien Mu, a Koji master from Chiayi in order to pass on and continue Ye Wang traditional Koji pottery. Wu Jung was his youngest apprentice then. Besides the integration of the pottery into traditional Chinese theater, Wu Jung’s Koji pottery also features the combination of western aesthetic. He executes the pinching method and kiln drying technique well to present the vivid actions of statues. On top of carmine, the glaze color used for Ye Wang Koji pottery, more than a hundred glaze colors have been developed. He is an outstanding craftsman. This article focuses on a study of Wu Jung’s Koji pottery. The research was conducted through reference, in-depth interviews, participation, and artwork analyses to systematically organize Wu Jung’s learning process, art features, methods, procedures, design concept, substance and the contribution of art..
