Han-Chinese/indegene biethnic descendants of urbanized indigenous people ethnic identity ruling relations ruling relations-mapping
According to recent statics, children from Han-Chinese/indigene intermarriage family being registered as legitimately indigenous people had made up a larger proportion of all indigenous people than before. Legitimate indigenous people who descended from biethnic lineage, or even multiethnic lineage became more and more common. There were approximately half of indigenous people who live outside their hometown most of the time. These indigenous people were not very different from mainstream ethnic groups in language, culture, or habits. Nowadays people who are legitimately indigenous people had become more of a complex population. The tags “Han” and “indigenous people”, “indigenous people in tribe” and “indigenous people in city”, were not enough to describe indigenous people population properly anymore. The purposes of this study were to explore the processes of forming ethnic identity by using institutional ethnographic study to tell stories, to reveal the ruling relationships and the interactions of powers, and to outline the social relation maps which belongs to descendants of urbanized indigenous people from Han-Chinese/indigenous intermarriage family. The main theme of this study was the descendants of urbanized indigenous people from Han-Chinese/indigenous intermarriage family who were born and raised in cities. For the study purposes, I interviewed four descendants of urbanized indigenous people from Han-Chinese/indigenous intermarriage family who are different ages and different tribes. The conclusions of the study were summarized as follows : 1. Descendants of urbanized indigenous people from Han-Chinese/indigene intermarriage family who are Han-Chinese/indigene biethnic live in between two identities and two sets of social standards. They must choose to fit in one of the identities and standards depending on situations.
2. The ruling relations to ethnic values hidden in family influence the ethnic identity development of descendants of urbanized indigenous people. 3. The ruling relations to ethnic values hidden in school influence all students through teaching and instructions from teacher. 4. There are complex interactions of national ruling powers lying behind the formation of identity structure of descendants of urbanized indigenous people from Han-Chinese/indigene intermarriage family. 5. Social culture shows indigenous people a specific kind of institutional text. The text repeats over and over in daily life. 6. The progress of forming ethnic identity of descendants of urbanized indigenous people from Han-Chinese/indigene intermarriage family has gone from passive to initiative. The progress shows its subjectivity and mobility in the society which contains complicated interactions of power.
