描述: Spatial and temporal variations in the atmospheric deposition of PAH to soils and the occurrence of hydrophobic soils along an urban-rural gradient were examined by a soil dish experiment and a forest soils survey. Results indicated that PAH concentrations in the experimental and forest soils increased with proximity to the urban centre. A consistent PAH signature is observed for the experimental soils indicating the ubiquity of the emission source. Forest soils show an enrichment of the lower molecular weight PAH in the rural areas suggesting atmospheric transport of the predominantly gas-phase compounds from the urban source region. Soil-air partition coefficient and fugacity calculations show that soils act as a sink in rural areas and a source in urban areas. Urban forest soils are more hydrophobic than comparable rural forest soils, supporting the hypothesis that atmospherically-deposited compounds, which are more abundant in urban areas, increase soil hydrophobicity.
