描述:
Australia is experiencing some of the highest levels of land clearing in the world, with unknown effects for many wildlife species, including flying foxes (Pteropus sp). In Chapter 1 of this dissertation, I develop spatially explicit models of probability of occurrence and density of P. poliocephalus across time throughout coastal New South Wales, using satellite-derived remote sensing data and land cover maps in a geographic information system (GIS). My results suggest that the bats preferentially seek out native foraging resources and utilize "built up" (land cover areas that have been subject to human modification, spanning a range from rural to urban gradients) areas to supplement their diet or to obtain resources when natural food resources are scarce. In Chapter 2, a comparison of two statistical techniques, one of them a recent addition to the ecological literature, was used to select and apply models that identify flowering food source variables that predict presence/absence of foraging flying foxes in southeastern Queensland, Australia. Results indicated that ornamental plantings in anthropogenic landscapes are providing important food sources for bats and may be drawing them into closer association with urban centers. In Chapter 3, presence-absence data for P. poliocephalus and P. scapulatus and phenological data were used to evaluate the use of urban resources by flying foxes and the interspecific associations between the two species in an expanding area around Hervey Bay in southeastern Queensland.
