This thesis examines a subtropical rain forest in which a stress gradient (directional wind exposure) generates and interacts with gradients of light, moisture and soil nutrients to produce a sharply differentiated mosaic forest on windward vs. leeward slopes separated by very short distances. This rain forest sits astride low mountains at an elevation of 300 m above sea level, on slope facing northeast into the direction of the prevailing monsoon winds. In 1989 a permanent three hectare plot was established in Nanjenshan Nature Reserve in Ken-Ting National Park on the southern tip of Taiwan. The plot measuring 100 m wide by 300 m long and spans the wind stress gradient from the most exposed to the most protected sites. All free standing woody plants with a stem diameter of at least 1 cm dbh at breast height have been tagged, identified, measured and mapped. A total of 118 species and 36,609 individuals, representing 78 genera and 41 families, were recorded in the census. On windward slopes, the forest is very short in stature (3-5m), unstratified, high in stem density, and low in per-area species richness. Leaves are small and thick, and litterfall rates are low. On leeward slopes and in protected creek bottom, the forest is taller in stature (>10m), stratified, low in stem density, and high in per-area species richness. Leaves are larger, thinner, and litterfall rates are much higher. Soil chemistry analyses indicates that the soil of study site are relatively acid and low in available nitrogen and organic carbon. Furthermore, the soil of windward habitat are relatively poorer than those of the leeward habitat. On the other hand, light levels reaching the soil surface are high in the windward forest and low in the leeward forest. The results of TWINSPAN and Chi-square analyses demonstrated that the Nanjenshan forest is highly differentiated into zones with abrupt changes in species composition, and the existence of varying degrees of specialization and generali
