  • 描述: This dissertation investigates temporality and process in the music of Gerard Grisey. Among spectral composers, Grisey takes a particular interest in the temporal domain. The temporal process that underlies the evolution of sound in spectral composition emerges as an important component of compositional strategy in Grisey's music. I aim to illuminate the notion of process in Grisey's work, focusing on how temporal/rhythmic elements evolve over time. This dissertation consists of two parts: "Foundational Concepts" and "Analysis." The first is comprised of two chapters examining the concepts and elements derived from electronic music, which Grisey applies to his work, along with the notion of process in his spectral compositions. In Chapter 1, I examine the compositional techniques Grisey learned by working with electronic music and subsequently applied to his acoustical instrumental writing. I use examples from Grisey's work to demonstrate the outcome of his experimentation. In Chapter 2, I discuss the centrality of process in Grisey's music. Grisey works with the physical properties of musical tones, whose evolution over time provides models for some of the processes in his compositions. In Part II, I perform detailed analyses of two of Grisey's compositions, Periodes in Chapter 3 and Tempus ex Machina in Chapter 4, finding that Grisey's spectral work employs combinations of temporal strategies, among them acceleration and deceleration (arithmetic, geometric or exponential), periodicite floue, and le temps dilate, to generate a variety of rhythmic organizations that he uses to create temporal processes.
