  • 描述: While attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a diagnosis that presents itself throughout the lifespan, its unique presentation in adolescence is important to consider as mental health professionals continue to develop their treatment plans. Given the greater demands that are often produced during this period of life, the challenges these teens face can both influence the family dynamic and can even be exacerbated by specific parenting practices. This study examines the current research that is available and the unique features of ADHD during adolescence and its impact on the family system. Specifically, greater levels of parental stress and psychopathology have been evidenced in families whose teens have an ADHD diagnosis, resulting in increased family dysfunction. This study also focuses on best practices that have been shown to improve symptoms and help parents more effectively support their teens. Many of the evidence-based practices presented target symptoms, such as inattention and impulsivity, that can greatly contribute to difficulties teens face in both their personal and academic lives. Additionally, given the high comorbidity of ADHD with other diagnoses, better understanding how ADHD is characterized in adolescence can help mental health professionals differentiate their treatment goals. It is the aim of this dissertation to explore the resources that are available to better meet the needs of adolescents with ADHD along with their families, so both mental health professionals and families alike are better equipped to support their clients/teens.
