  • 描述: In his foreword to Silence, John Cage comments on the unusual forms in much of the book: 'I have employed in them means of composing analogous to my composing means in the field of music.' Does composing words as one composes music transform those words into music only if they are to be sung? What's actually at stake here? Cage had in mind word compositions that activate a certain intuitive immediacy (in writer, performer, audience) more commonly associated with music than speech: 'My intention has been, often, to say what I had to say in a way that would exemplify it; that would, conceivably, permit the listener to experience what I had to say rather than just hear about it.' John Dewey's Art as Experience is brought to bear on a discussion of Cage's 'mesostic' word composition Art Is Either a Complaint or Do Something Else.
