描述:
The obstacles to the beneficial use of biosolids in the Northeast include lack of effective regulation, questions concerning health or environmental impact, lack of farmer or landowner interest in using biosolids, overregulation, fears about liability, and public opposition to the siting of beneficial use facilities. Recognizing the need to improve the understanding of biosolids utilization, New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley sponsored legislation allocating $1.2 million to the US Environmental Protection Agency to conduct research, demonstrations, training and education concerning the beneficial use of biosolids. An Information Sharing Group (ISG) was developed to include biosolids managers and representatives of federal agencies. The ISG has conducted meetings to address many of the public's questions about biosolids. A research project has been established to assess the impact of biosolids-derived products on the environment and
ecology
of a sensitive ecosystem in southern New Jersey.
